Easter Surprise

March 27, 2016

We had spent the first 2 days of the Easter break boating in the lovely hot sunshine but the cool grey skies and showers of Easter Sunday kept us home today but what a bonus.  In a gap in the rain I went to see what might be on the main dam. There was a female fig bird enjoying the bumper harvest of Morton Bay Figs and an azure king fisher but it was the dragonflies I was looking for. There are still lots of palemouth (Brachydiplax denticauda) by far the most common blue dragonfly on the dam this year, and fiery skimmer (orthetrum villosovittatum) males are nearly every metre. However today there was a rather large dragonfly which caught my eye.  Eventually it settled and on the water and to my delight it was a green emperor the first of the season busy egg laying. A sight to brighten a gloomy day.
